passion & a big heart

traditional tyrolean hospitality passed down through the generations at the hotel solaria in Ischgl

The Hotel Solaria in the Ischgl Paznaun ski resort has been owned by the same family for several generations. Oswald Kathrein built the hotel in 1977. Since then it has developed a reputation as a place where guests are more than just room numbers and many become friends of the host family here at the Hotel Solaria. Indeed, Oswald's father, Julius Kathrein, was himself at the forefront of the movement to develop Ischgl into a tourism destination.

Today it is Ankie and Markus Kathrein who are the third generation to manage to hotel - a task they enjoy every single day.

The combination of Ankie's Dutch/Asian roots and Markus's Tyrolean heritage form a unique combination continuing the tradition established by his father and grandfather: to treat each guest in a friendly, courteous and attentive manner.

Ankie Kathrein had always dreamt of owning her own boutique selling traditional Tyrolean clothing. Now that dream has become a reality with the opening of the first store in Ischgl.

In Juler’s Trochta Loda, the small but perfectly formed boutique in Ischgl, Ankie and her team will be happy to help you find the right outfit for you, from traditional Lederhosen for the men to a charming Dirndl for the ladies.

history of the hotel Solaria

great-grandfather's vision helped make
tYrol a world-famous skiing destination

The history of the Hotel Solaria in Ischgl started more than 100 years ago. Back then the village was very poor – little more than a remote mountain village. Benjamin Kathrein, the great-grandfather of today's owner, was convinced that tourism was the key to the region's development.

Together with his son Julius he founded the Gästehaus Fernblick in 1937. This was one of the first places to offer accommodation to visitors and therefore a milestone in the development of tourism in Ischgl. Today the Fernblick has become the Hotel Solaria.

The Hotel Solaria – founded in 1937 as the Gästehaus Fernblick – was one of the first skiing hotels in the whole region of Tyrol!

Markus and Stefan Kathrein learned much from their father, Oswald, about the importance of nature. Their passion for natural materials can be seen in the dining room and wine room at the Hotel Solaria, which both feature intricately carved woodwork representing one of the valley's oldest and most precious traditions.

This regional focus can also be found in the hotel kitchen, where our team of chefs uses ingredients sourced from the local producers to create delicious delicacies. Sustainability and local traditions are two of the passions the Kathrein family enjoy sharing with their guests.

looking ahead

Here at the Hotel Solaria environmental protection and sustainability are more than just empty slogans.

Since opening, our hotel has not used a single drop of heating oil. Instead, we use environmentally-friendly biomass to heat the building.

 for Guests & nature

the Hotel Solaria has been given the austrian environment award for tourist accommodation

This award is presented to tourist accommodation providers with a particular focus on sustainability and waste reduction.

We at the Hotel Solaria are very proud to have been awarded this status and see it as confirmation of our long-term commitment to protecting the local surroundings which make our region so special.

Together with their three children, Ankie and Markus Kathrein take the issue of environmental protection very seriously in order to be able to pass on a clean and healthy planet to following generations. Staff retention, regional producers, local ingredients and correct recycling are the four key pillars of our sustainability policy here at the Hotel Solaria.
